Hot Shop & Annex Assistant

Step into the role of Hot Shop & Annex Assistant, where you'll monitor our bustling studios alongside the Hot Shop & Annex Coordinator. Assistants rotate shifts between 6:00 AM and midnight (with breaks for meals, events, and artist presentations). This position is ideal for emerging glass artists with intermediate to advanced hot glass skills and experience in studio monitoring.

Recommended Experience:

• Extensive knowledge of hot shop techniques (blowing, sculpting, casting, etc.)
• Familiarity with hot shop equipment and tools (gas & electric furnace, garage, torches, etc.)
• Previous experience in monitoring a busy educational or public access studio

General Outline of Tasks:

• Collaborate with other studio staff on a rotating schedule to oversee operations in the Hot Shop & Annex
• Assist with the technical functions of the studios
• Participate in orientations for program participants
• Organize cullet prepping and charging by TAs and students, stepping in as needed
• Keep tools, equipment, and materials organized and accessible
• Monitor furnaces and annealers
• Ensure proper usage of tools and equipment in both shops
• Maintain a clean and safe studio environment
• Support the Campus Studio Technician and the Hot Shop & Annex Coordinator with various projects
• Complete daily tasks assigned by the Hot Shop & Annex Coordinator and Studios Manager
• Assist with daily clean-ups and end-of-session tidying
• Attend weekly staff meetings

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift up to 55 lbs repeatedly
• Capacity to stand for extended periods

Compensation:

• A minimum commitment of two sessions is required for the Hot Shop & Annex Assistant position
• Work up to 40 hours per week at a rate of $20 per hour
• Room and board provided while on campus
